Get Unstuck with Imperfect Action

As a spiritual healer, I often work with want-to-be-entrepreneurs. One of the biggest issues they all have in common is failure to launch

By that, I mean they spend an awful lot of time pushing paper around on their desk, doing endless research, feeling overwhelmed by all their options, or daydreaming about starting their business “someday.” Years end up going by and they never start.

Why is this? They are either waiting for the perfect time to start, waiting for self-doubt to pass, or waiting for the perfect idea to drop into their lap, or all the above! Until then, they remain stuck. Here is the reality of launching a business:

There will never be a perfect time. There will always be bills to pay, schedules to juggle, relationships that need attention. Waiting for that perfect time ends up being a story you tell yourself for permission to continue procrastinating.

There will never be a perfect business idea. Like anything else, most great ideas have already been implemented along with many variations and iterations of those great ideas. But that’s the beauty of it; there will never be a business like the one that you will build, even if it’s based on an existing product, service or idea. Your energy and approach will give it that unique magic sparkle.
You will never feel 100% ready. We ALL feel nervous about our idea, about putting it out to the world and hoping it won’t crash and burn.
We all feel imposter syndrome. It happens to every single one of us. We say to ourselves “who am I to think I have anything important to offer?” or “why would someone buy from me, there are already so many people who do what I want to do!”

All of these things keep very bright, creative people from starting their dream business. We think we have to have it all figured out ahead of time when, in fact, the opposite is the best way to get unstuck. It’s called “taking imperfect action.” After you write the business plan, buy the domain name and get the business license, then you simply take the first step! Set a deadline to have your product or service ready to promote. Gather a few beta-test customers to give you feedback and then adjust. It’s not perfect, but you will get real insight on what works and what doesn’t. You might even discover a brand new product or service you could offer in the process!

You see, you can celebrate your progress through imperfect action! You learn that you can course-correct as you go. You really don’t have to have it all figured out before you launch. Know that you will build, change and grow as you take action and soon you will have made your dream business a reality!
